Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old autistic boy who apparently jumped from the window of a mental rehabilitation facility in Kwai Chung on Tuesday.
At around 4 p.m., a restaurant worker found the teenager, surnamed Leung, lying unconscious in a back alley near Man Shing Building on Wo Tong Tsui Street, where the facility operated by Graceful Home Co. is located, Apple Daily reports.
After the worker called for help, police arrived and had the boy sent to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The father said his son had told him that he was feeling depressed about staying in the facility called Bridge of Rehabilitation, and had asked that he be released from there.
Initial investigation suggested that the boy jumped out of a window by himself, but police did not rule out the possibility that there might be negligence on the part of the operator of the facility as the windows might not have been locked.
Bridge of Rehabilitation is a private residential care facility for mentally disabled people. Grace Home is licensed by the Social Welfare Department to run the facility.
According to news website hk01.com, the head of the facility had been sued in two cases of indecent assault on female residents. He was acquitted in both cases.
An inspection in March this year found that sanitation and safety at Graceful Home (South Wall Road) were inadequate, the report said.
For example, the doors to the kitchen and the rooftop of the facility were found to be not locked, it added.
