Guangzhou police have arrested three men and seized 1 million yuan (US$150,000) worth of counterfeit Hennessy cognac at a factory in Tianhe District, Yang Cheng Wanbao reports.
The fake wine, stored in moldy plastic barrels and poured into cognac bottles, was about to be sold to a Hong Kong merchant when the police raided the hidden factory whose windows were all covered up, Yangcheng Wanbao said.
The three men arrested, aged 31 to 36, are all from Hunan province.
One of them said he came to Guangzhou in February to look for work.
But as he could not land a job, the two other men approached him and invited him to make fake wine. He said he was promised 40,000 yuan a year.
Police sources said the gang made deliveries three to four times a week, with each lot estimated to be worth 40,000 yuan.
Police officers have been monitoring the activities of the trio since March before finally making the arrests on Aug. 9.
The seized fake wine could be sold for over 1 million yuan, the report said.
