Man, 64, jailed for molesting young niece more than 20 years ago

A 64-year-old man was sentenced to five years in jail on Tuesday after he was found guilty of molesting his then-four-year-old niece more than two decades ago, with a district court judge slamming the defendant as being shameless for not showing any sign of remorse.

Judge Sham Siu-man said the defendant, who had been convicted on six counts of indecent assault, deserved the jail term because he has violated the trust of the girl and caused her mental anguish over the long term.

The sentence must reflect the public’s repugnance toward sexual crimes, the judge said, according to Headline Daily.

Under the law, the maximum sentence for a person who commits indecent assault is 10 years imprisonment.

Earlier, the court heard about incidents going back to 1990, when the defendant began to molest the victim, touching her private parts.

He is said to have carried on the activities until the girl reached the age of nine, molesting her more than 70 times during the period.

The victim’s mother and the defendant’s wife were sisters.

The victim, who is now 30, reported her suffering to the police only in 2013 after she read media reports about other women who had been abused in their childhood and filed cases many years later.

She claimed she has been seriously troubled by what had happened to her and that she has been under psychotherapy even after she emigrated from Hong Kong, Ming Pao Daily reported.

Deeming her testimony as being sufficient, the judge decided not to ask for a trauma report.

After sentencing the uncle, the judge urged the victim to try to put the whole thing behind her and get on with her life with a positive attitude.
