Circle K fined for selling ant-infested hotdog

The Eastern Court has slapped a HK$3,500 fine on Circle K Hong Kong for selling an ant-infested hotdog at its outlet in Wah Fu Estate in Pok Fu Lam.

The convenience store operator sent a representative to plead guilty to the charge of “selling food not of the quality demanded” after a customer found 208 ants in the hotdog bought at the outlet in January and reported it to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, news website hk01.com reports.

Special magistrate Arthur Lam Hei-wei pointed out that this is the sixth time Circle K has been convicted of selling unhygienic food products, but it was the first time for the outlet at Wah Fu Estate.

Lam urged the store operator to institute better measures and tighter supervision to ensure the hygiene and quality of its products, noting that even “one ant is too many”.

The Circle K store’s management pledged to improve the cleaning of its facilities and make sure no ants were found in its machines and premises, Apple Daily said.
