Maid charged with stealing HK$150,000 from old employer

A 36-year-old Indonesian domestic helper has been arrested and charged with theft for allegedly stealing nearly HK$150,000 from her 81-year-old employer over a span of three years.

The defendant, Tarwiyah Solik, often asked the old woman, Ng Giu, to withdraw money from the bank so she could accompany her to see a doctor, but those visits were never made, Apple Daily reports, citing court records.

The maid is said to have repeated the same trick more than 100 times, enabling her to pocket a total of HK$147,200 from her employer.

It was only when Ng mentioned the bank withdrawals to her daughter that the latter realized her mother was being conned, Sing Tao Daily reported.

The helper was charged before the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court with theft from January 2014 to November this year.

The prosecution asked the court to extend the trial to Feb. 8 next year because Ng could not remember details about the case, and they had to check records and surveillance camera footage from her two banks.

However, the judge rejected the prosecution’s application and scheduled the next hearing on Jan. 9, 2017.

The defendant was put in custody while awaiting trial.

During police interrogations, the defendant denied stealing money from her employer, although Ng’s daughter said the maid had admitted to her that she had stolen HK$110,000.
