CY Leung not running for second term

Chief Executive CY Leung has announced that he will not seek a second term in office, citing family reasons.

Leung said he has informed the central government about his decision, public broadcaster RTHK reports.

In a hastily arranged media conference, Leung cited family reasons and “responsibility as a father and a husband” for the decision.

“In my family, my children only have one dad. My wife only has one husband,” he said.

“Everyone in Hong Kong can see that the central authorities, including the top leaders of the country, have been very supportive of my work over all these years,” Leung is quoted as saying by RTHK.

“Yes, I have my own ideas. As I said, I shall support whoever wins the election and whoever is capable of being appointed by the Central People’s Government.”

Leung’s term ends in July.
