A woman from Changning County in Sichuan province was said to have been killed and buried by means of a bulldozer on Wednesday after she tried to stop workers who had been instructed to acquire farms in her village.
The victim, surnamed Zhou, had reportedly rejected a proposal to buy property in the village at 2,000 yuan (US$289.79) per mu (around 6,000 square feet) before the incident, news website hk01.com reports.
Some of the land plots owned by Zhou had already been occupied by the workers, and this could have prompted her to protest aggressively.
County officials issued a statement on Wednesday night saying the bulldozer operator and a site supervisor had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Media representatives wondered whether authorities were trying to play down the case of homicide as a liability issue due to negligence.
According to Beijing News, the Changnian government has set up a task force to investigate the incident and propose a compensation packge for those affected.
