A court in eastern China on Wednesday sentenced a former Communist Party chief of Nanjing city to twelve-and-a-half years in jail after finding him guilty of corruption.
The Ningbo Intermediate People’s Court said Yang Weize misused his position to accept millions in bribes, either directly or through his wife, over a ten-year period, Reuters reports.
The former official admitted his crimes, expressed repentance and cooperated in returning the dirty money, the court was quoted as saying.
Yang is said to have taken bribes worth 16.4 million yuan (US$2.4 million) between 2005 and 2014.
He was put under investigation early last year by the Communist Party’s internal anti-graft watchdog.
Yang, who took on his role as Nanjing party chief in 2011, had been a member of the Standing Committee in Jiangsu province.
