Regina Leung, the wife of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, has hit out at DAB chairperson Starry Lee over the latter’s remarks in relation to the health condition of one of Leungs’ daughters.
Speaking to reporters after participating in a public event Tuesday, Hong Kong’s First Lady accused Lee of making irresponsible comments with regard to Leung Chai-yan.
Remarks made by the DAB chief that suggested that Chai-yan, the elder daughter of the Leungs, is very ill are dubious and not with any basis, Regina said after the opening ceremony of the Centenary International Camp of the Hong Kong Girl Guides.
Slamming the “arbitrary” and irresponsible remarks, Regina said people shouldn’t comment on matters on which they don’t have enough knowledge.
The First Lady stressed that her daughter is in good health and that rumors on her health condition are incorrect.
However, she refused to go into details about Chai-yan, brushing aside questions as to whether the daughter has been discharged from hospital or why she was admitted to the medical facility in the first place, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
Regina’s husband declared recently that he won’t stand for re-election due to “family reasons”.
The surprise announcement set off speculation that the decision, at least in part, could be related to the health condition of his daughter, who hit headlines in the past for disturbing emotional behavior.
Last Wednesday, Lee waded into the debate by saying during a talk-show that she understood that Chai-yan’s health condition was poor. Also, she made some comments that echoed rumors of an unsatisfactory relationship between Chai-yan and her mother.
Regina was dismayed by the remarks, prompting her to criticize the DAB chief yesterday.
The comments were unfortunate especially as they came after Lee and Regina met up two weeks ago, the First Lady said.
She also said that her husband would never reveal their family matters to anybody.
Lee’s remarks may have been made based on her own superficial understanding of the situation, said Regina, adding that the DAB chief is in no position to judge or make arbitrary comments as she doesn’t know the full story.
Responding to the criticism, Lee, who is currently on an overseas trip, told Apple Daily that she is more than glad to know that Chai-yan’s health is good.
She added that she sincerely hopes that the Leung daughter will recover soon.
