HK can’t afford to miss Bay Area opportunity: People’s Daily

The People’s Daily has urged Hong Kong to participate actively in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area development plan, warning that failure to do so could prove costly for the city.

In a column posted Monday in its overseas edition, the Communist Party mouthpiece pointed out that Greater Bay Area has been listed as a national strategic plan following a work report unveiled by Premier Li Keqiang during China’s “two sessions” in March.

As such, Hong Kong should make the most of its advantage as the bridge between the mainland and the rest of the world to play a key role in the plan, the article said, describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that the city should seize.

Bay Area development can help Hong Kong improve the social situation and resolve internal contradictions, it added.

While the article was highly optimistic about the prospects of the plan, it expressed concern that it could be hindered by potential objections from the pan-democratic camp.

Hong Kong’s opposition camp has long been known for stalling any cooperation with the mainland just for the sake of disagreeing, it said.

If opposition groups come in the way of the Bay Area development plan, Hong Kong could see itself get marginalized, the article warned.

The piece was published as Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying prepares to lead a delegation of more than 30 people to Guangdong province, the Hong Kong Economic Journal noted.

During a three-day trip from Wednesday, the delegation will visit Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Zhongshan and Zhuhai to learn more about the cities’ latest initiatives in infrastructure, town planning and innovation and technology, with meetings scheduled with local leaders.
