Knife-wielding man arrested in Lam Tin after tense search

Police arrested a man in his forties or fifties on Thursday outside Lung Chak House in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

The arrest came after the suspect was earlier spotted holding a six-inch ceramic knife outside Lung Yuet House, hk01.com reports.

The man was seen going into the Wong Tai Sin MTR station and was next seen at the Lam Tin station.

Police spotted the suspect leaving Exit D at Lam Tin station. He ran for about 200 meters before entering the three-story Laguna Plaza mall, according to Sing Tao Daily.

About 50 officers armed with shields were dispatched to the site and the shopping center was locked down but the search was futile.

They caught up with the man in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate at 10:40 p.m. and arrested him.

The Regional Crime Division of the Wong Tai Sin district, which has taken over the case, said the suspect is about 1.7m tall, bald and obese, and was wearing a dark colour top, jeans and black gloves and carrying a black backpack.

Sources said the man is jobless and the police are investigating his motives and mental state.

They will also review CCTV footage to determine if the suspect was flashing the knife throughout the incident.

Meanwhile, there were reports that a man was seen holding an axe on the concourse of Choi Hung MTR station at around 8:50 a.m. on Thursday.

Police said it was a separate incident.
