2 HK tourists dead, 10 seriously injured in Guangzhou bus crash

Two people were killed and at least 10 were seriously injured when a coach carrying a Hong Kong tour group met an accident along an expressway in Panyu district in Guangzhou on Monday night, hk01.com reports.

Initial reports said the 44-member tour group was on the way back to Hong Kong when the accident happened.

Based on photos and videos of the accident uploaded to Facebook, the bus was seriously damaged and rescuers had to make a hole on the side of the vehicle to get inside.

Most of the injured were taken to the Panyu Central Hospital.

The Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau confirmed there was an accident near the Qianhaichong Grand Bridge but had yet to confirm the details.

A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Immigration Department said they have been in touch with the travel agency as well as the Travel Industry Council (TIC) to find out more about the situation and assist the victims.

Tung Yiu-chung from the TIC said he received a notice from Big Line Holiday Limited that one of its tour groups was involved in a traffic accident, adding that 10 members of the group had to stay behind for treatment and 32 had come back to Hong Kong.

One of the travelers, Miss Chong, sustained wounds on the forehead, chin and limbs, Apple Daily reported.

She said she was on the bus with her sister and brother-in-law when the accident occurred. “There was a big bang and everything went white,” she said. “My sister woke me up later and the entire bus was in complete chaos.”

All three of them only suffered minor injuries and were able to return to Hong Kong on Monday night.

Chong said the two fatalities were seated near the tour guide, who also suffered massive bleeding.
