President Xi Jinping says Beijing is maintaining a “firm grasp” on the full powers of governance the Basic Law and national legislation have given the central government over Hong Kong
In a speech at the Communist Party’s 19th National Congress on Wednesday, Xi said the “one country, two systems” principle in Hong Kong and Macau has been an astounding success that has amazed the world.
He said the governing principle will not be changed or distorted. The central government’s jurisdiction over the two special administrative regions should not be shaken.
Xi said patriotism must be strengthened among the people of Hong Kong and Macau, so they can share a strong sense of national identity with their peers in the mainland.
It’s important for those running Hong Kong and Macau to be people who love the country, he said.
Meanwhile, Xi described the Greater Bay Area project as a chance for people from the two SARs to develop.
Xi vowed to oppose any moves toward independence in Taiwan. He said Beijing has properly handled the changing situation facing the island.
The mainland will promote the peaceful development of its relationship with Taiwan and will continue to resolutely oppose any move to seek independence for Taiwan, Xi said.
