Police are looking for an animal killer after several turtles were found dead in an outdoor pond in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
At about 11 a.m. on Thursday, a staff member found the dead reptiles in a second-floor pond and called the police, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. They also called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for help.
SPCA later confirmed five turtles dead and five seriously injured. They were all red-eared terrapins.
All the turtles were apparently stabbed with pencils. Many of them were stabbed in the neck or mouth, investigators said.
Some were impaled from head to tail, according to some media reports.
The ones that were still alive were brought to SPCA’s Wan Chai center but one died on the way.
The case was listed as animal abuse. No arrests have been made.
Two turtles were abused to death in the same pond just last month, with one showing a wound left by some kind of pen. The other was found stuffed in a food bag.
