A 50-year-old man died after he crashed his car into a big tree while driving in rainy weather in Lantau North early on Monday.
According to the police, the fatal accident took place at about 7:35 am, when the man was traveling along Magic Road southbound, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
He was believed to have been driving his seven-seater vehicle in heavy rain, as an amber rainstorm warning was in force at that time.
Police arrived at the accident scene, which was about one kilometer away from the Disneyland theme park, along with paramedics and firemen soon after receiving a report.
They found the man trapped inside the vehicle, which was heavily damaged due to strong impact, lying unconscious with serious head injuries.
It took firemen a while before they could pull the man out of his mangled vehicle. The victim was then rushed to North Lantau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 am.
Police suspect the man had been driving at high speed before he lost control of his vehicle and crashed it into a tree.
Hong Kong Disneyland later confirmed that the accident victim was one of its employees.
The company offered condolences to the man’s family and promised to provide all necessary assistance.
In March 2013, two Disney engineers traveling in an open-top car on the same road rammed their vehicle into a tree.
That accident, which also occurred near Inspiration Lake, killed the passenger. The driver, who was seriously injured, was reported to have been arrested on the charge of dangerous driving causing death.
