An 80-year-old woman has escaped jail after she was accused of assault and criminal intimidation of a foreign domestic helper who worked for her family.
The defendant, surnamed Pang, pleaded guilty to the charge of common assault against her at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Monday, hk01.com reports.
The magistrate then ruled that she has to be bound over to be of good behavior for two years as well as enter into a recognizance in the sum of HK$3,000. She was also told to pay a HK$500 fee for the costs of the court action.
The court heard earlier that the victim, a 35-year-old Indonesian maid who was hired by Pang’s son in March last year, was slapped in the face in January this year by the old woman, who barged into her room and scolded her for wasting electricity by turning on a dehumidifier.
The maid did not tell her employer about the incident, but about a month later, Pang entered the maid’s room uninvited and slapped her again, claiming that she was wasting electricity.
This time the maid told her employer, who allegedly showed no care about what had happened to her.
The maid finally filed a complaint with the police against the old lady after she was beaten for the same reason for the third time on Feb. 28.
According to the maid, during the third incident, the old lady hit her in the mouth, chest, shoulders and arms, and told her she would have killed her if only she could do so without being jailed.
However, the old lady did not know that the maid was broadcasting the incident on Facebook and was seen and heard live by the maid’s friends.
The 10-minute clip went viral on social media and even attracted foreign media coverage.
The lady was arrested a day later, although she initially denied having beaten the maid, claiming she only poked her shoulders a couple of times.
