Smart speakers catching up in the US

American families are warming up to smart home appliances and the internet of things trend, thanks to devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home.

In the second quarter, 24 percent of respondents in a survey said they own smart speakers, according to research firm Nielsen, two percentage points higher than the previous quarter.

Among these smart speaker owners, 40 percent own more than one while 62 percent are first-time users.

Meanwhile, 45 percent of respondents said they are planning to get one.

The majority of smart speaker owners use it for listening to music, getting weather reports and traffic information.

Thirty-two percent of owners connect their smart speakers to the cellphone. Other popular devices they hook up with the speaker include the television set, hi-fi system, lighting, fridge and door locks.

The average use time of such speakers is about one hour.
