Xiaomi integrates Ikea smart lighting products in IoT ecosystem

Chinese smartphone and appliance maker Xiaomi (01810.HK) has established strategic cooperation with global furniture and homeware giant Ikea for integrating the latter’s smart lighting products into Xiaomi’s Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.

According to a Twitter post from Donavan Sung, Xiaomi’s global spokesperson and director of product management, the partnership was announced at the Xiaomi AIOT Developers Conference that is currently underway in Beijing.

“Going forward, Ikea’s line of smart lighting products will be connected to Xiaomi’s IoT platform, starting in December,” Sung wrote in his Twitter post.

In addition, Xiaomi’s ‘Mi Home’ app designed to manage Xiaomi devices and products, as well as Xiaomi’s AI voice assistant ‘Xiao Ai’, will be compatible in Ikea’s smart lighting products.

Speaking at the conference, Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun said the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT will be the core strategy of his company’s business in ten years.

With a goal to allow users to fully embrace AI in daily life at home, every smart device of Xiaomi will be connected with the company’s IoT platform in three to five years, the CEO belives, thanks to the expected significant drop in manufacturing cost of IoT devices.

Lei also announced the latest result of Xiaomi’s effort in AI and IoT ecosystem: Its AI voice assistant ‘Xiao Ai’ has been activated in about 100 million devices as of November 25 since its launch, with a monthly active user base of 34 million.

According to the company’s third-quarter financial report, Xiaomi has sold a total of 132 million units of consumer devices connected in its IoT ecosystem. The IoT business recorded 10.8 billion yuan (US$1.55 billion) in revenue as of the third quarter of 2018, up 89.8 percent from the same period last year.

On its website, Ikea states that all the Ikea smart lighting products are now compatible with Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa, if the app is available in the respective market. As an example, Ikea’s Trådfri smart bulbs, available for sale in the China market, are now compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Chinese media have reported that Ikea has recently integrated into its catalog the smart products of Xiaomi.
