A wedding scene straight out of Crazy Rich Asians

The wedding scene in that blockbuster of a rom-com movie Crazy Rich Asians will soon be replicated in real life – in Hong Kong.

According to Sing Tao Daily, exiled billionaire and former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will throw a big wedding bash for his daughter Peathongtarn Shinawatra and her groom at the soon-to-open ultra-luxury hotel Rosewood Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Thaksin’s youngest daughter will tie the knot with Piok Sooksawas, a pilot by profession, next Friday, the newspaper said.

Friends and relatives of Thaksin will descend on our city, including his sister Yingluck, also a former prime minister who is likewise in exile.

It is said that Peathongtarn and Piok dated for two years before she gave her sweetest “yes” when the dashing aviator popped the question during a private party in July last year.

Peathongtarn is the largest shareholder of SC Asset, a listed real estate developer in Thailand.

In 2009, she bought a posh three-storey home at No. 19 King’s Park Hill in Ho Man Tin for HK$45 million, or about HK$13,583 per square foot. It proved to be a shrewd investment as the market price tripled in 10 years.

So it doesn’t come as a surprise that the couple chose to celebrate their union at Rosewood Hong Kong, which is owned by the family of real estate magnate Henry Cheng Kar-shun, chairman of New World Development (00017.HK).

The hotel, which will be run by his daughter Sonia Cheng, is located in the group’s landmark Victoria Dockside. Rosewood Hong Kong will occupy 43 floors of the 66-storey tower, which commands arguably the best view of the Victoria Harbour.

So next week, eyes will be ogling and tongues wagging when very rich Asians sparkle and dazzle outside the silver screen at Rosewood.
