Hong Kong job market keeps improving
Hong Kong’s job market continues to recover, with the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropping by 0.5 percentage points to 5 percent for the period between May and July, according to the Census & Statistics Department.
Total employment rose by about 9,900 to 3,650,000.
The jobless rate between April to June was 5.5 percent and that of the preceding three-month period was 6 percent.
Improvement has been seen across most industries. Even sectors hardest hit by the pandemic showed more signs of revival.
The combined unemployment rate of the consumption and tourism-related sectors, including retail, accommodation and food services, fell by 0.9 percentage points to 7.6 percent.
In particular, the unemployment rate of food and beverage services fell by 1.4 percentage points to 8.6 percent.
The unemployment rates of the construction sector, and the arts, entertainment and recreation sector also registered visible declines.
Secretary for Labour & Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong said the labour market should continue to improve along with the economic recovery. Meanwhile, preventing the spread of the more contagious Covid-19 variants and progress in the take up of vaccination would be critical to recovery.
